Accessing Aged Care services isn’t just about going into care

accessing aged care

Mention Aged Care to some people and their minds immediately jump straight to going into an aged care facility. This isn’t helped by the fact that, not too long ago, aged care facilities were called nursing homes. Yikes!

For this reason, many older Australians don’t ask for help when they need it. They carry on at home, not letting on how bad things are becoming.

Realising that a loved one isn’t coping is distressing for the older person as well as their family, friends and neighbours. But accessing Aged Care services isn’t just about going into care. It’s about getting you the help you need, when you need it.

With a focus on keeping you well at home for longer, let’s take a look at what aged care services are available today.

Help! (I need somebody)

One day, perhaps quite suddenly, it becomes clear you’re not handling things as well as you used to. Your usually spick and span home is getting a bit grubby. Maybe the bins aren’t being put out every week and the lawns are overgrown. Perhaps you’re no longer able to cook healthy meals so you’re not eating properly.

This doesn’t mean you’re ready to move into aged care. It may just mean you need a little extra help. And we all need help now and then.

If your toilet was blocked, would you hesitate to call a plumber? Or if your car was in for a service, would you worry about calling a taxi? Of course not. You need the help, so you ask for it.

We don’t feel bad about asking for help with things we can’t do ourselves, why should we feel bad about asking for a little more help as we age? Young people ask for help all the time and they don’t worry about what anyone thinks. And let’s face it, if they didn’t ask for help, Jim’s Mowing would be out of business!

So what’s the big deal about asking for help for things that may be a little tricky?

In fact, we can already show you six reasons why it’s a great idea to start planning ahead. Thinking about the services you might need keeps you in the driver’s seat when it comes to your changing circumstances.

I get by with a little help from my friends

For many people, accessing aged care today usually begins with a few light services to help ease the load. Not only that, but it also frees up your time so you can do the things you want to do, rather than the stuff you have to do.
Want some delicious and nutritious meals delivered to your door?

Do you fancy the idea of sitting back with a cuppa and watching while someone else mows your lawns or mops your kitchen. (Actually that sounds good to me!)

Or do you need someone to help carry your shopping and take you to and from your social activities once a week?
These days, there’s plenty of help available and helping you make the best choices is just one of the many services I offer.

You’ve worked hard for many years and now is your time to get out and enjoy life. Joining a local social club and enjoying an outing with friends new and old is good for the soul.

It’s a long way to the top (if you wanna rock ‘n’ roll)

Asking for help, and asking early, may actually help you maintain your independence for longer. Having someone do some light cleaning and a spot of washing is a long way from moving into an aged care facility.

Accessing all the aged care services you need can take some time. Whether you need some help at home, some short term (respite) care or you’d just like to have a better understanding of your aged care home options, I work with you and your family to guide you through the process.

Everybody… needs somebody (to love)

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Even if you’d just like to arrange a free 15 minute phone chat to get started, I’d love to hear from you.

As mentioned a little earlier, it can take some time accessing all the help you need and are entitled to.
That’s where I come in and it’s what I love to do.

It was after helping my Nanna navigate the Aged Care system a few years ago that I realised people needed help. My help.

It may seem a little daunting but with me by your side, you’ll be connected with everyone and everything you need. And maybe even a few more things you didn’t realise you could access.
